The widow of a man who died after confronting a queue jumper in a Sainsbury\u2019s supermarket has launched a blistering attack on the justice system, saying the sentence handed to her husband\u2019s killer is \u201can absolute joke\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Clark, 43, had been out celebrating Newcastle United\u2019s victory\u2014describing it as \u201cthe best day of my life\u201d\u2014when his life was cut short during a routine shopping trip with his wife at a Sainsbury\u2019s store in Beckenham, south London. While waiting to pay, Andrew challenged Demiesh Williams, 30, after he pushed ahead in the queue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Andrew\u2019s partner of 23 years, Cairistine Clark, Williams reacted with fury. As he left the shop, he reportedly threatened staff and customers, vowing he would \u201cget him outside\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments later, as the family exited the store, Williams confronted Andrew and struck him with an open-handed slap. The blow caused Andrew to fall backwards, hitting his head on the ground. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries three days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams, a bus driver, later admitted manslaughter and was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court to five years and three months in prison. He will be eligible for release after serving two-thirds of that term. Andrew\u2019s family walked out of court before the judge finished speaking, branding the punishment grossly inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe court hearing was utterly devastating,\u201d Cairistine told the Daily Mail<\/em>. \u201cThere is no justice for a life taken. He won\u2019t even serve three years. That\u2019s two Christmases and he\u2019ll be free. He\u2019ll still be a young man when he gets out\u2014and my husband is gone forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cWhat message does this send to violent criminals? We will carry this pain for the rest of our lives, while he gets to go back to his. That is something I cannot accept.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cairistine rejected suggestions that the attack was minor. \u201cPeople say it was \u2018just a slap\u2019, but I\u2019ve seen the scans. I\u2019ve seen the damage,\u201d she said. \u201cHe killed him with his bare hands. I was only steps behind Andrew. I saw everything. I heard everything. And then he was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Andrew lay critically injured, Williams fled the scene, driving away with his young child still in the car. Cairistine said she cradled her husband in his final moments. \u201cI\u2019m sure he died in my arms,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the man who did it just ran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the case was originally heading to trial, Williams pleaded guilty to manslaughter. During sentencing, the family were further distressed by what they described as a complete lack of remorse. Unable to endure the proceedings, they left the courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThree years for taking a life,\u201d Cairistine said. \u201cThat\u2019s barely anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She warned that lenient sentences fail to deter violence. \u201cIf people know they\u2019ll only get a few years for killing someone, it won\u2019t stop them. Now our daughter is growing up without her dad. He was everything to her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cairistine described Andrew as a selfless, generous man who was known and loved by many. \u201cHe had time for everyone,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat happened to him has changed every moment of our lives. Innocent families don\u2019t deserve this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement read aloud by her aunt, Andrew\u2019s 14-year-old daughter told the court: \u201cMy dad wasn\u2019t just my dad\u2014he was my best friend. We did everything together. He was the most generous man I know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sentencing Williams, Judge Andrew Lees acknowledged the scale of the loss. He described Andrew as a hardworking family man who was deeply loved, adding that the family\u2019s grief was \u201cunimaginable\u201d and that the tragedy \u201cshould never have happened\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking into account Williams\u2019 guilty plea, the judge imposed a sentence of five years and three months, with a requirement that at least two-thirds be served in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cairistine now plans to meet with the Crown Prosecution Service to raise concerns about the outcome. Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick also criticised the sentence, calling it \u201cpaltry\u201d and saying he had written to the Attorney General to ask for it to be reconsidered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
